Toby Sherwood — most people get warrghh
I make things, mostly under my own flag.
AI Strategy Lead at Xcession by day. Compulsive builder the rest of the time.
- AI Strategy Lead · Xcession
- Data engineer turned AI
- Led teams that ship
- Trinity College Dublin
- Builds in public
I came up as an engineer — data engineering first, then leading the teams that actually ship. Trinity College Dublin for the degrees, then the better part of a decade turning messy data and vague requirements into things that work. I’ve usually been the person who has to make the demo real by Monday, and that bias — toward shipped, not theoretical — is the throughline in everything here.
My day job is working out where AI genuinely earns its keep for a business and where it’s just expensive noise. It can do an enormous amount now. What it can’t do is have taste, or care about the particular odd set of things I care about, and that’s the part of the work I actually find interesting.
So I build, constantly, in public. A planning tool for grassroots football coaches. A way to actually understand fragrance instead of being sold it. A no-nonsense guide for people who hate being sold to. Small, real products, shipped under my own flag rather than waiting for permission. Some land, some don’t; I’d rather ship the bad idea and find out than polish a deck about it.
Off the clock I’m usually gaming, or writing about the ones that stuck with me. I like work that’s honest, a little irreverent, and made with obvious care. If something here is useful, take it. If you want to build something, come say hello.
